Holidays aren’t supposed to harm you!

Our first holiday together as a couple was to Acapulco in the early 90s.
It was three weeks for the price of two with Thomas Cook.
We flew Manchester to Heathrow, Heathrow to Mexico City, and finally, Mexico City to Acapulco.

How it started ….
• Checked in at Heathrow and was offered seats upstairs on our flight, and of course, we said yes – loved this and our own drinks trolley! ✈️
• Flight from Mexico City to Acapulco stalled on runway, as had a flat battery. It was about an hour until the issue was fixed and took off during a thunderstorm. Lighting all around us and a lot of turbulence ⛈️
• Went to Tony Roma’s restaurant for a meal on the first night along with other couples we met on the flight.
• Horrendous food poisoning for a week – both of us and both ends! 🤢 and so did about another six couples!
• Living with vitiligo, I now use factor 50, but back then, I was not used to tropical heat and sun. I ended up with third-degree burns on my shoulders and back – it was like chicken skin crackling on a roast. ☀️
• We decided to have a go at jet skiing – I was knocked off by a speedboat and fell into the sea. I was not a strong swimmer but managed to keep afloat. It didn’t help that I’d watched a documentary on sharks mating in the Gulf of Mexico before we came on holiday. Tony went back for help but had forgotten which part of the beach we had left from, and about 40 minutes later, he returned. Meanwhile, I was bobbing up and down in the salty sea in the midday sun with my sunburn.🦈
• Tony then suggested horse-riding on the beach. Got on my horse but did not feel comfortable, so I asked to get off. I think the horse could sense I was a nervous rider. Tony got on his horse but was a bit spooked with my horse getting close, and his horse back-kicked and hit my knee. All I heard was a thud and a cold sensation and didn’t dare look at my knee. Luckily, nothing broken but a massive lump on my knee. I spent the rest of the time sitting on a deckchair on a deserted beach in the middle of nowhere. 🏖
• Decided no more adventures, and we would just relax in the shade (me) or in the pool.
• We watched the cliff divers in Acapulco, and it reminded me of one of the Elvis Presley movies – Fun in Acapulco!
• Before we left Acapulco, a tropical storm touched down, followed by a small earthquake.

All I can say is what an experience that was for our first holiday together, and it was the start of many more to come. 33 years later, and we are still loving our adventures.
