B is for Bergen, Norway

A cruise into the fjords from Bergen

We visited Bergen in May and had a great time exploring the city. Weather was a mix of rain, cloud, and beautiful sunshine.

When sun came out it made such a difference, and there are plenty of places to sit, drink, dine, and watch the world go by.

Byparken, Bergen

It was an easy transfer from the airport by tram into the city centre. About 40 minutes, get off at last stop, and it was a short walk to Hotel Oleana.

Our hotel was lovely. I would definitely recommend staying here. Breakfast is included in all bookings. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Our first afternoon and evening were spent wandering around the town and waterfront in the rain.

To escape the rain, we had a very nice but a bit on the expensive side meal at the Ying Ying Restaurant on the main square. It was delicious.

We love a funicular, and Bergen has a perfect one that takes you up above the city for some amazing views of the city. Look out for the friendly goats as well!

At the end of the funicular are the choices of several forest walks at different levels and you can choose to walk back down into the city centre. It was great to just wander around the forest and came across a lake.

Bergen is easy to walk around and explore. There is the Byparken to visit, train station, a castle, historical sites, viewpoints, fish market and restaurants, the Bryggen houses and waterfront, and cruises up the fjords, and much more….

A highlight for us was a Rodne fjord cruise. This cruise takes you past the Mostraumen straits, a scenic and narrow fjord channel that is 600 meters long and only 50 meters wide. The waterfalls are amazing, scenic views and stunning mountains. You have a choice of standing outside, or sitting inside the boat. It is worth catching a chill to stay outside, so layer up, the views were stunning.

Food and drink in Bergen is as cheap and expensive as you want it to be. Great choices of snacks or meals with some lovely restaurants, but you need to book if staying over a weekend, as most places are busy.

Street art around the city

We flew with Jet2 for the first time, short flight time, and a good experience. We are definitely planning to visit Bergen again, as still more to do. We loved the culture and how relaxing our trip was.
